- Do people think?

Today at work I was talking on the phone to a man I have never met in person but who I talk to quite regularly. He lives up north and knows that I live in the south. He calls me "grits".
I have always thought he was a nice man.
But today he said to me, "Want to hear a funny joke? It's sort of bad." And I said sure, after all I'm no prude.
And he told me a horrible little ditty about Japan being washed away.
I'm sorry, but I didn't find it funny.
And I had to tell him so, because there was no way that I could just sit back and let this happen, even if I do have to call him for work.
I had to remind him that thousands of people are sitting in cold apartments right now, worried about people they love. Worried that the people they love are dead, washed up on a beach.
And then I reminded him of where I live and of Katrina.
He apologized, and said he didn't mean it to sound insensitive, it was just funny. And I told him that I understand that people respond to fear with jokes sometimes, after all, we make jokes down here all the time.
And we let it go.
I still think he is a nice man. He just didn't think.
Or maybe I'm just naive.
